YAA Jubilee shoot

Andrew Neal - 17 May 2012

The Yorkshire Archery Association is putting on an additional shoot in the calendar this year as a one-off to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee.

The shoot is designed to attract archers of all standards and would particularly encourage new and inexperienced archers to join in.

The round has deliberately been set as the Western fleet of rounds that covers all rounds from 100 yards down to the shorter junior distances. Archers can elect to shoot any of the rounds, and I would encourage the inexperienced to shoot the Western Round. This is 4 dozen at 60 yards followed by 4 dozen at 50 yards.

The shoot is to take place on Monday 4th June at the Grange Park Sports Complex, Wetherby, just off the A1. Anyone interested in entering please complete the entry form and send it to me:

Please note the closing date as per the entry form will not be enforced, and should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me on agneal@tiscali.co.uk or 01757 249233 (after 6:00 PM - I do have a day job!).

Many thanks

Harvester Spring shoot cancelled

Jayne Motson - 4 May 2012

Unfortunately, owing to lack of entries, the Committee of Harvester Archers has decided to cancel our open competition which was due to take place on the 27th of May. Obviously the wind has put people off returning to what was a fantastic shoot. We apologise for any disappointment caused.

The St.George Longbow Tournament 2012

David O'Carroll - 23 April 2012

The eighth tournament was held on Sunday 22nd April 2012 at Morley.

The Custodians are pleased to announce that the Shoot-off for the Royal Armouries Arrow was won by Colin Hope of Chantry. The Bowmen of Adel hosted the competition again with the Royal Society of St.George at the Morley Rugby Ground, Scatcherd Lane, Morley. There were 66 entries for the 60 places available. Thanks to the loan of two bosses from All Abilities Archery no-one was turned away.

The weatherman got his forecast spot on and we arrived to a dismal scene though the rain held back for the first arrows. But this was followed by Towton cold rain and even the best archers on the field found that arrows were missing the target. There were quite a few glum faces until it was realised that the weather was affecting all equally. There was talk of curtailing the competition but after pie and peas and liquid sustenance over the lunch break the spirits of this company of archers were raised.

The shoot-off for the Arrow was judged by the Master of the Arrow, Sean Gleeson, resplendent in his red judges uniform. The competition was close, and after shooting at the Wand and the pig Adrian Hayes led with 33 points, Keith Riley followed with 22 points and forlornly Colin Hope trailed with 19. But fortunes can change quickly in the third part of the shoot-off where there are 30 points available. Colin only needed half of these to secure the arrow and ensure that his name and club is engraved on a gilt shield hanging from the arrow to be seen by all who care to visit the Tournament Room at the Royal Armouries.

The trophies were awarded by the Lord and Lady Paramount Mr & Mrs Trevor Astley. Mr Astley commented that this tournament is now a firm fixture on longbow archers' calendar and that he hoped to see everyone again next year if not before at the YAA longbow championships in August.

The following prizes were awarded:
Ladies: Jayne Motson (most hits), Trish Walsh (on score) and Sam Foster (golds)
Gentlemen: Adrian Hayes (most hits), Keith Riley (on score) and Colin Hope (golds)
 Junior: Elizabeth Foster

At 60 yards Sam Foster and John Naylor won the trophies for best golds and John Geldard won the trophy for best gold at 50 yards. Chantry won the best club team of four archers (Adrian Hayes, Colin Hope, Steve Hicklin and Sam Foster) and Samlesbury won the trophy for a team of three (John Geldard, Tony Adamski and Leroy Shervington). Jayne Motson scored 21 whites for the most whites trophy and Chris Dyal the trophy for the worst white at the last end. David Hood of the Bowmen of Adel won the Agincourt Volley.

Amy wins Olympic place

21 April 2012

Amy Oliver of Dearne Valley Archery Club today booked her place at the London 2012 Olympics as a member of the Great Britain archery team.

Amy faced tough opposition in challenging conditions - rain, hail, wind and sunshine. She overcame all to finish top in the Women's Recurve category with a total of 6167.60 points.

Naomi Folkard finished second with 6130.67 points and also claims an Olympic place. Alison Williamson finished third with 6058.60 points, but must wait until the 9th of May to find out whether she gets third place, which is at the discretion of Archery GB's Performance Director Sara Symington and Head Coach Lloyd Brown.

Amy tops the Olympic selection shoot

Kath Fitzpatrick - 16 April 2012

Yorkshire archer Amy Oliver finished at the top of the group today in the second stage of the Olympic Team Selection Shoot. She carried forward an excellent performance from the first stage which put her in 2nd place, but shot very strongly to move into the lead on a very cold day, and retain it throughout the day.

Amy now goes forward in a very strong position to the final shoot-off matches on April 20th and 21st at Lilleshall. These will be located on the terrace next to the Hall and, over the two days, in front of around 2500 school children from around the country.

Best of luck Amy!

Winter Field Archery League 2011-2012 results

Shaun Duggan - 14 April 2012

Dear all,

Congratulations to everybody who took part in WFAL 2011/12. We had a record number of 321 archers participating, with a total of 1015 scores submitted to me. The most popular discipline was Barebow, accounting for 350 of those scores shot by 102 archers.

I have finally finished collating and checking all the WFAL scores for this winter.

These have been uploaded to the GNAS Field web site:
GNAS Field: Winter Field Archery League 2011-2012 results

I encourage you to look at the Diary 2012 link on the GNAS Field web site. It is regularly updated and displays the entry forms for field shoots throughout the UK, together with the results. It would be great to see these shoots supported by more archers and it is an opportunity to try out these new-found skills.

Best wishes and good shooting for this year.

Kind regards,
Shaun Duggan

Dani narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the Mixed Compound category, when she and John Stubbs were edged out by Canada, who won by 154 points to 152.

Individually, Dani won through to the quarter-finals against a very strong field, but was knocked out by US archer Tristan Skarvan, 140 points to 137.

Yorkshire Award for Wendy Fryer, Albert Kiddy and John Seddon

19 March 2012

Three archers have been recognised with the Yorkshire Award, which is presented for exemplary service to the archer's club over a number of years:
 Wendy Fryer of The Wakefield Archers;
 Albert Kiddy of Dearne Valley Archery Club;
and John Seddon of Dearne Valley Archery Club.

Seddy will be presented with his award at the club by Albert, the YAA's Vice President; Wendy and Albert received their awards from the YAA's President Andrew Neal at the YAA Indoor Championships.

Citation for Wendy Fryer

I would like to nominate the Wakefield Archers Chair Wendy Fryer for the Yorkshire Award. Although I acknowledge that the award is in recognition for achievements over the previous twelve months, the context of Wendy's contribution both to the Club and to Archery is felt over a period much longer than that, culminating in Wendy being elected Chair for a second time at the AGM in September 2011.

Wendy first became interested in Archery many years ago after taking part in a 'have a go' at Selby Game Fair hosted by the Selby Archers. She was given fine instruction and contacted Wakefield Archers (her nearest club) and completed the beginner's course. Bitten by the Archery bug she formally joined the club, bought her first set of equipment following completion of the course and has been shooting ever since.

In her first year at The Wakefield Archers Wendy was approached to join the committee and has used her enthusiasm for the sport to drive the club to bigger and better things ever since.

Over the following years Wendy became a familiar face around the archery competition circuit always trying to strive for that better score, building both her skill as an archer and friendships with other archers. When attending competitions hosted by The Wakefield Archers Wendy always ensured a friendly and warm welcome for Archers of all abilities, putting both beginners at their ease and ensuring that a high standard of competition existed for more experienced archers. Some of these archers have since moved onto a greater role within archery undertaking judging responsibilities and the success of Wakefield Archers competitions is, in part, due to the positive relationships which Wendy still maintains.

Over the subsequent years Wendy has undertaken various positions within the committee, always giving her best, encouraging, disciplined and loyal. During Wendy's first tenure as Chair and with help from other dedicated members she steered the club through a difficult period and possibly helped save the Wakefield Archers from closing down, building a positive reputation in the process.

Forming a new committee took time, and club members were not always sure about taking on additional committee roles and responsibilities. However, Wendy endured and through both support and clear direction built a competent and active committee which kept The Wakefield Archers alive.

When it was identified that a new indoor shooting venue was needed Wendy was the driving force behind the identification and securing of facilities at the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS).

This took considerable time and effort and required detailed and sensitive negotiation with the Governors and Head of the school to be successful. Even when formally agreed there was significant work to be undertaken to ensure that the venue was fit for purpose. This included purchasing and siting a new shed for equipment to be stored outside with indoor storage facilities also being secured. More significant work was required within the hall itself with the installation of tracking and netting needed. Wendy was instrumental in ensuring that all of this was completed and that the Wakefield Archers would consequently have a new indoor home.

Once completed, Wendy did not sit back and bask in the knowledge of a job well done; she now used the indoor venue to deliver a number of beginners courses, often sacrificing her own shooting time to ensure quality instruction for individuals new to Archery.

The new indoor facilities were soon noticed by the Yorkshire Archery Association and negotiations began to hold the Yorkshire Indoor Portsmouth Competition at QEGS. Wendy again, being instrumental in ensuring that not only did this take place, but that it was professionally run, efficient, well organised and yet welcoming and enjoyable. This success led to other requests to hold competitions by the Northern Counties.

Wendy also ensures that Archery and the Wakefield Archers are represented during discussions at our outdoor venue at Slazengers Sports Club. Being a shared facility she often needs to ensure that our sport is adequately acknowledged in the context of football, hockey, tennis and other sports which also use the facilities, which she manages to do with tact, diplomacy and a significant degree of success. This has been positive to the extent that Wakefield Archers are now integrally involved in discussions regarding the future of the site and development of the facilities which offers some exciting options for The Wakefield Archers in the future.

Following the intense period of work associated with the changes noted above; running beginners courses, negotiating with Slazenger's, QEGS, YAA and Northern Counties and neglecting her own archery she decided to step down as Chair. However, this did not reduce her influential role within the club as she could always be seen helping others, giving information and introducing new members to other established archers.

In September 2011 Wendy was once again elected as Chair of The Wakefield Archers. This is true testament to the dedication, commitment and support that Wendy continuously displays. She has never courted formal recognition or thanks for this work, indeed just sees this as part and parcel of an active life within the sport. I disagree and would propose that she has often given of herself and her time disproportionately to others for the good of the sport and the club. In true Wendy fashion she just gets on with it.

Citation for John Seddon and Albert Kiddy

The members of Dearne Valley Archery Club nominate John Seddon and Albert Kiddy for the work they have done in establishing a new archery field course at Haigh Village near Barnsley, following the club losing its field course at High Melton in November 2009. Both John and Albert have spent time and effort planning and building the new venue, thus promoting field archery in Yorkshire, as they have done in their own exemplary way over the last 40 years.

Archery in schools

Andy Wilkinson - 17 March 2012

I am trying to find out about the extent of archery in schools. The county has a couple of school clubs but I would like to know more about any work that clubs and coaches are doing in schools. Would clubs and coaches active in schools please let me know about what is happening.

From time to time I get queries from schools and I need to be able to direct the queries appropriately. Therefore would any clubs and/or coaches who have capability to work in schools during the day or after school time please let me know where and what they can provide. I am already aware of a number of commercial companies who offer these services but I would appreciate any information even if it duplicates what I have.

Thanks,

Dani wins gold in Nimes

22 January 2012

Danielle Brown has won the Ladies Compound gold at the Nimes Indoor International tournament in France. She beat a world-class field, including former champion Petra Ericsson of Sweden, to reach the final, where she beat Marcella Tonioli of Italy to claim the gold.

This result confirms that Dani is not only the best Paralympic archer, but one of the world's best archers outright.

Congratulations from the YAA to Dani.
