Richard Breese is to judge at the London 2012 Paralympics. This is in addition to being the Official Scorer at the Olympic archery at Lords, judge at the Paralympic test event in May 2012, and recently being upgraded to a full International Judge.
Richard's in for a busy year of international archery without even leaving the country!
Congratulations from the YAA to Richard.
Karen Winsett - 13 October 2011
I have just been informed that Richard Breese has now been upgraded to a full International Judge. Congratulations and well done Richard!

WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT
Following an incident at a recent field shoot, the practice of leaving a bow propped against a target whilst searching for arrows will stop forthwith.
Henceforth, when it is necessary to search for arrows behind the boss, one member of the shooting group must stay visible in front of the target to ensure that following groups do not shoot until all archers are clear of the target.
A formal rule confirming this guidance will be published in due course.

Stan Snow has decided to retire from judging, after more years than anyone can remember. At the YAA AGM on Saturday the 13th of March 2010, he was presented with a crystal decanter by Karen Winsett, the county's Judge Liaison Officer.
We thank Stan for his outstanding contribution and wish him well for the future.

WHY?
During at least 2 field shoots this year archers have needed to be removed from the course quickly due to a medical emergency.
In both cases it took time to communicate this to someone with a radio who could then arrange the medical assistance.
The archers raised the fact that there was currently only one call for assistance: "JUDGE Target x".
When a judge hears this, they go to the target, waiting for groups to shoot, taking the paths. This takes time.
This doesn’t distinguish between "JUDGE we need a line call or there is a twig in the way" and "We need help now".
The archers felt vulnerable and discussed a solution before coming to the committees.
The process is not a rule change.
It is a procedure to be used in emergencies, emergencies being the normal meaning of the word - it does not include arrows stuck in trees or overhanging branches.
Archers should ask themselves - does someone need help quickly? Would you normally call 999 in this situation?
If the answer to either question is YES, then call RED.
THE PROCEDURE
An incident occurs and the archers on the target decide they need EMERGENCY help.
The group call "TARGET x RED" - e.g. "TARGET 15 RED"
This call is heard by other archers who IMMEDIATELY STOP SHOOTING and REPEAT THE CALL
The course has now stopped shooting and is clear for Judges, First Aiders, and Organisers etc. to make their way to the target by the shortest and quickest route.
The incident is dealt with.
Judges will re-start the shoot on WHISTLES.
No one will shoot until this re-start is signalled.

Mark Hayes - 2 March 2011
All judges, please be aware that after 1st April 2011, scopes may be left on the line for both GNAS and FITA rounds.
This is of course subject to safety conditions, e.g. wind or bad weather when they must be secured down or removed. If they cause aggravation to other archers on the same target, then they should also be removed on these occasions.
From 1st April and not before.

The Judges Confirmation and Expense Form was designed following comments made by a number of judges, who have had to approach tournament organisers to seek re-imbursement for their various expenses, almost feeling that they have had to negotiate the matter or value of their expenses for the day. They have also not been sure of the arrangements being provided (or not provided) by the club for the judge's lunch.
The approach we're recommending is for the tournament organiser or club secretary to send the form to the judge well in advance of the event, and for the judge to return the confirmation of their attendance and expected expenses, such that these matters can be settled well before the day.
If you are responsible for organising such a tournament, or are the secretary of a club that runs such a tournament, we request that you use this form.
To prevent double booking of Judges, the Judges Confirmation and Expense Form includes a tear off slip to send to Karen Winsett, the Judges Liaison Officer, when the booking has been confirmed. The form can be downloaded as a Word document:
